Colour by Numbers – using Excel to solve equations without algebraMany algebraic equations cannot be solved by algebra. One way to find an approximate solution to algebraic equations of the form g(x) = h(x) is to accurately graph y = g(x) and y = h(x) as separate functions of x. Any points of intersection will then be solutions. A better method, now that we have computers to do all the tedious calculations, is to first express the equation in the standard form f(x) = 0, and then to determine points where the graph intersects the x-axis.
