GRADUATION CEREMONY

Protocols for Graduation
ON YOUR ARRIVAL
All students must report to the tiled verandah at the back of Don’s Tavern (opposite side of the building to Juicy Bits) one hour PRIOR to the start of the ceremony.
Graduands who do not arrive on time will not be permitted to join the ceremony.
Graduands will be assembled in alphabetical order by family name and will then be seated in the Hall.
Students should read the relevant page in the “Protocols for Graduation ” document for a detailed explanation of the ceremony procedures.
The University will host refreshments for graduates, their families and friends following the ceremony, in Don's Tavern.
Marshalling
1.25pm -Graduands should arrive at the University at least one hour prior to the ceremony so they are
available for marshalling.1.30pm -Graduands are to assemble on the tiled verandah at the back of Don’s Tavern.
(i) Staff will organise graduands into the correct seating order and will brief students on the
proceedings.1.55pm -Graduands will be led into the Sports Hall and directed to their appropriate seats.
Entering the Hall2.00pm -Students arriving after graduands have been seated may not be able to graduate and may have
to attend a future graduation ceremony.2.30pm -Graduands and guests should stand until the Academic Procession is seated on stage.
Note: Male graduands should remove their trencher whenever seated. Female graduands wear their
trencher throughout the ceremony.
GUEST INFORMATION
Guests are requested to be seated in the auditorium 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the ceremony. The ceremony will take approximately 90 minutes, all guests are requested to remain in the auditorium until the conclusion of the ceremony. Seats are not allocated and guests are seated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Doors to the auditorium will open approximately one hour before the ceremony commences. Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
THE CEREMONY
- The graduation ceremony will commence with the entry of the academic procession into the auditorium. The Chancellor is the last member of the procession to enter the hall. The Chancellor is proceeded by the Mace Bearer who carries the University Mace – the symbol of his authority.
- The ceremony proceeds as follows:
- After members of the academic procession have taken their place, the musical group will play the National Anthem.
- The Chancellor will then formally open the ceremony.
- The Chancellor by the authority conferred on him by the Council of the University, will then admit graduands to the degree or diploma for which they have qualified. At this point they become a graduate.
- Each graduate is then presented individually to the Chancellor. A photograph is taken as graduates are presented.
- Following the presentations of any University Medals or special awards, the Doctor of Philosophy candidates are presented to the Chancellor.
- At times the University awards Honorary Doctorates; if any are to be presented they will be awarded at this point in the ceremony.
- A guest speaker will then address the assembly.
- At the conclusion of the ceremony the Academic procession will leave the hall in the reverse order of their arrival. The graduates will be invited to join the academic procession.
- Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
The Ceremony Commences
Official Opening.
Occasional Address by the Guest Speaker.
Admission of graduands to their awards:
(i) The Vice-Chancellor will ask all graduands to stand. The Chancellor will then admit graduands to graduands to their Degrees/Diplomas as a group.
Students Process onto Stage
(i) Graduands will be presented in the following order:
1. FACULTY OF BUSINESS School of Business
School of Information Technology
School of Sustainable Development
2. FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES & MEDICINE
3. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES
4. FACULTY OF LAW
(ii) When the first row of graduands moves out of the front row all other rows remain seated.
(iii) The first row of graduands moves to the right hand side of the graduands’ seating area.
(iv) Graduands are to line up in the same order in which they were seated.
(v) As each candidate is presented, the line of graduands will move forward towards the right hand side of the stage.
(vi) Graduands are to walk to the foot of the steps (stage-right) when directed by staff.
(vii) When the Dean reads your name, walk onto the stage and cross behind the Dean to receive your testamur from the Chancellor.
(viii) When you meet the Chancellor, doff your trencher, shake the Chancellor’s hand and receive your
testamur with your left hand. Female graduands are not required to curtsy.
(ix) Leave the stage by descending the steps at the centre of the stage. Return to your place and be seated.
(x) Once a row of graduands has been presented with their awards, a staff member will ask the next row of graduands to stand so they are waiting at the right hand side of the stage to receive their awards.
University Charge
After all candidates have been presented the Vice-Chancellor will call on all graduates to stand in their places for the reading of the charge. After the charge is read, please be seated.
Valedictory address.
Approximately 4:00pm - The Ceremony Closes
Academic Procession departs.
Staff will direct graduates from the Sports Hall when appropriate. Graduates are asked to move promptly to the ground level to avoid congestion at the doors to the Sports Hall.
Afternoon Tea
The University will host refreshments for graduates, their families and friends following the ceremony at Don’s Tavern directly underneath the Sports Hall.
