Steps towards a law career

Career Action Plan


1st Year LLB

Semester 1

  • Meet with the Career Development Centre to discuss career plans
  • Get involved in campus life – student associations etc
  • Work part time (legal or non-legal) to develop soft skills
  • Attend Career Development Centre workshops
  • Register profile on e2e.net
  • Undertake research of your own into the law profession and possible career paths.

Semester 2

  • Meet with Faculty Graduate Development Manager re: work experience opportunities
  • Apply for work experience
  • Part time work
  • Stay involved on campus/community or sporting life
  • Attend Career Development Centre workshops
  • Develop list of employers of choice and undertake information interviews to build relationships with employers of interest

Semester 3

  • Undertake work experience
  • Part time work
  • Stay involved on campus/community or sporting life
  • Review resume and application tools/processes
  • Develop list of employers of choice and develop relationships with them – information interviews
  • Learn and/or enhance your job communication skills – CV, covering letter, interviews etc.

2nd Year LLB

Semester 1

  • Apply for advertised clerkship programs – April - Sep
  • Attend CDC Graduate Recruitment Workshops
  • Attend Employer Fair on Campus – March
  • Prepare for clerkship interviews

Semester 2

  • Participate in clerkship recruitment process – ensure interview skills and negotiation skills are finely honed
  • Part time work
  • Stay involved on campus/community or sporting life

Semester 3

  • Undertake clerkships or work experience
  • Continue to achieve academically
  • Consider PLT or Articles as a means of admission. Research PLT programs and the pros and cons of each

3rd Year LLB

Semester 1

  • Undertake clerkships or work experience
  • Attend Career Development Centre Graduate Recruitment Workshops
  • Attend Employer Fair on Campus – March
  • log on and register with www.cvmail.com.au as early as possible – some closing dates are as early as January and February
  • Apply for Graduate Recruitment– must have maximum amount of experience on resume to support graduate applications
  • Prepare for interviews
  • Participate in graduate recruitment process – ensure interview skills and negotiation skills are finely honed
  • Negotiate and accept graduate opportunity

Semester 2


1st Year JD

Semester 1

  • Meet with the Career Development Centre to discuss career plans and learn and/or enhance your job communication skills – CV, covering letter, interviews etc
  • Attend Employer Fair on Campus – March
  • Get involved in campus life – student associations etc
  • Meet with Faculty Graduate Development Manager re: clerkship and work experience opportunities
  • Apply for clerkships / work experience
  • Attend Career Development Centre Graduate Recruitment Workshops
  • Register profile on e2e.net
