Doctor of Legal Science(SJD)

COURSE OVERVIEW | COURSE STRUCTURE

Duration: 4-9 semesters full-time

Intakes: Each January, May & September

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor with Honours or a postgraduate qualification in law. Candidates for the SJD degree must satisfy the Dean that they have the academic, research and writing abilities to produce in English a major dissertation of not more than 50,000 words which represents a substantial contribution to the exposition, knowledge or understanding of the field of study concerned.

Students may be required to complete one semester of a Master of Laws before gaining admission to the Doctor of Legal Science (SJD). For transfer to the SJD program, students will normally be expected to obtain a mark average of at least 75%.

The Faculty may consider applications on the basis of other qualifications and professional experience.

Program Structure:

The SJD is a research higher degree. Students must complete six postgraduate subjects and a 50,000 word major dissertation which represents a contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the field of study and which demonstrates a capacity for independent research.

Professional Recognition:

The SJD is a doctoral-level degree, equivalent to a PhD.

Examination:

SJD thesis are examined in accordance with s.62 of the University's Award Regulations, which require that two examiners be appointed, at least one of whom is external to the University.
