Bachelor of Laws

COURSE OVERVIEW | COURSE STRUCTURE

Duration: 2 years 8 months (full-time)

Entry Requirements:

Bond is committed to providing students with the potential to succeed in tertiary study and to fulfill their degree aspirations. The following will be taken into account:

For recent school leavers:

• all areas of school performance in years 11 and 12 or other pretertiary equivalent.
• an assessment of the applicant’s potential for tertiary study provided by the applicant’s school.

For current Bond Students:

• completion of 2 semesters at Bond University
• 65% average over the 2 semesters.

For mature applicants & applicants who have attempted post secondary studies:

• recent academic history in the form of any post-secondary or other relevant results and/or reports.
• referees’ reports on the suitability of the applicant for tertiary study.
• relevant work experience.

The language requirement is English IELTS 6.5.

Students who have already completed a Bachelors degree would normally apply for our postgraduate professional qualification, the Juris Doctor.

Bond’s law program is designed to equip students for a career in the legal profession, business, industry or government, both within Australia and overseas. Its combination of excellent teaching, small classes, international perspective and extensive legal skills program provides an exciting learning experience that both challenges students academically and prepares them practically for a legal career. The Law Faculty provides a broad range of support services for its students, including two Academic Advisers, a Writing Tutor, and an extensive orientation program. We also have a very high proportion of academic staff at senior (ie Professor and Associate Professor) level. Bond has consistently received excellent ratings for “good teaching” and “overall student satisfaction” from Graduate Careers Australia.

Bond has a distinguished record in Australian and international competitions, including two top-four finish in the prestigious Jessup International Law Moot. We also have a range of exchange agreements with leading universities in Europe and North America.

Note that up to 4 electives may be taken from subjects offered by other Bond Faculties. A wide range of law electives is offered, with particular emphasis on corporate, commercial and international law subjects. A range of specialist treams is offered:

For a student seeking to be admitted as a barrister or solicitor the choice of elective subjects may be circumscribed by professional admission rules. Students should seek confirm admission requirements with the relevant admitting authority in Australia or overseas.

Professional Outcomes

The LLB has been constructed to enable graduates to take leading positions in the public and private sectors, such as solicitor in private practice, barrister, government lawyer, in-house counsel and academia. As with all Bond University programs, multi-disciplinary study, skills and flexibility are distinctive features. Students are encouraged to emphasise specific areas of study which they feel best serve their proposed career paths.

Bond employs a Graduate Development Manager to assist students obtain employment, while our law graduates are employed in top law firms throughout Australia and across 38 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Scandinavia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Professional Recognition:

The Bachelor of Laws degree is an approved degree for purposes of admission as a legal practioner in all Australian jurisdictions. Due to rule changes in various States and Territories, students should always confirm admission requirements in the particular jurisdiction in which they wish to practise. In conjunction with further study, the degree can also be used to gain admission internationally.

Industry Experience:

The Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House (QPILCH) runs an administartive law clinic as a Bond elective Law subject. Students research cases and write submissions on behalf of QPILCH.

Combined Degrees:

Law can be combined with any other degree offered by the University. Combined degrees are encouraged by the Faculty of Law and take between three years four months and four years (full-time). Popular combinations include:
