Information for Students from Canada
Information Seminars in CANADA for Canadian Students - May / June 2008
Bond has strong links with Canada. There are currently over 130 Canadian students studying for law degrees at Bond and there is an active Canadian Law Students Association.
Several Canadian academics have spent time at Bond as visiting staff, including Professor Bruce Welling from the University of Western Ontario, Professors Ken Cooper-Stevenson, Dan Ish and Tim Quigley from the University of Saskatchewan and Professors Karen Busby and Lee Stuesser from the University of Manitoba. Professor Stuesser holds a continuing adjunct appointment to assist with our advocacy training program.
We have an arrangement with the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law, under which its staff periodically come to Bond to teach its course in Canadian Constitutional Law. Our students can take the course as part of the elective component of their Bond degrees. Students taking the course are also registered with and receive a transcript from the University of Manitoba. Bond also has a student exchange program with the University of British Columbia.
The Faculty's links with Canada have been fostered by Professor Eric Colvin who was Dean from 1996 to 2000. Professor Colvin is a Canadian who was Professor of Law at the University of Saskatchewan before he joined the founding staff at Bond. His writings on Canadian criminal and constitutional law have frequently been cited by the Supreme Court of Canada.
Canadians interested in studying at Bond are invited to contact Professor Colvin.
Students who have already completed a first degree may enrol in the Juris Doctor (JD) program.
Students who have not completed a first degree must enrol in the LLB program. Bond follows the Australian tradition in admitting high school graduates direct to the LLB program. Credit towards the elective component of the LLB degree will ordinarily be given for at least four subjects from any pre-law university studies.
Canadians graduating with an Australian law degree must pass some additional examinations in Canadian law before they can enter a bar admission course in Canada. For all provinces except Quebec, the additional requirements are determined by the National Committee on Accreditation (the ‘NCA’) of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
The NCA makes decisions on an individual basis so its rulings can vary from applicant to applicant. The major variables affecting NCA rulings include the amount of any pre-law undergraduate studies, the length of the law degree, the amount of any studies undertaken in a Canadian law school, and the marks obtained in the law degree.
As a guide, applicants with respectable Bond results and a four-year pre-law degree have commonly been required to take eight examinations in Canadian law. These may be completed through a Canadian law school or via exams set by the NCA.
