Description

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs offered by the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences are purely research only. Prior to formal application, intending applicants need to give consideration to the specific research topic they wish to investigate. This should be determined in consultation with a member of the academic staff of the Faculty to see whether the Faculty can provide the appropriate supervision. The candidate must be familiar enough with the relevant research area to be able to undertake specialised study in that field.

Statement of Research Interest

Prior to formal application, applicants need to give consideration to the specific research topic they wish to investigate. After consultation with a member of academic staff, the applicants for the PhD should write a brief statement (1000-1500 words) indicating the area in which the research is to be conducted. This statement should include:

• a proposed topic;
• prior research conducted by the applicant that relates to the proposal;
• previous publications by the candidate that relate to the proposal;
• literature references that provide relevant background;
• possible research methodologies (where relevant); and
• the name of a potential supervisor within the Faculty.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Humanities and Social Sciences) program provides students with the necessary research skills for academic careers in the university or research sector, or professional employment.
