John Burton Cadetship Scholarship

About the Scholarship

Applications for this scholarship are open annually from April 1 - July 31.

The John Burton Cadetship Scholarship in Journalism is awarded annually to Year 12 students who have strong academic credentials and a demonstrated commitment to a career in print journalism. As a partnership between Bond University and the Gold Coast Bulletin, it is a four-year program alternating work and study, with a guaranteed position as a newspaper journalist on completion. Successful candidates will study for their Bachelor of Journalism and work as a paid cadet at the Gold Coast Bulletin on a semester-on/semester-off basis. 

Value
  • 50% of tuition fees of a Bachelor of Journalism, with the balance being offset by wages earned at the newspaper
  • Cadetship at the Gold Coast Bulletin, whereby the recipient studies and works on an alternating semesterly basis
Availability

Generally, Bond University will awards one John Burton Cadetship each year.

Eligibility
  • Strong academic performance with As/Bs on Year 11-12 school reports or other applicable transcripts
  • Demonstrated commitment to a career in print journalism
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills
  • Extensive involvement in extra-curricular activities
Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will be awarded the John Burton Cadetship based on their ability to meet the eligibility criteria listed.
