Application Tips

The application form comprises of a few key sections . You can save and log-out of your application at any time so we suggest you take your time. When completing the Personal Details section, please use your full name as stated on your idetification. Please do not use nicknames.

To help you submit your application we have provided the following application tips:

  1. Decide what category of grant you are applying for - be it academic achievement, sporting achievement or community leadership/involvement. Think about where your achievements lie and how you want to use your grant and then decide which category best relates to these.

  2. Decide on your project and how it relates to the category you have selected - ensure you are clear in your own mind what type of project you want to pursue and why. Research - talk to other people you know whom have applied for grants or received funding in the past and find out how they went about it and what projects/goals were completed. What do you ultimately want to gain from receiving the grant and how do you think it will benefit you? Is it to further your development and skills in one of the three categories, or it is to purchase a particular item? In the application, you will be expected to describe your project and how it relates to the category you have selected. It may be a good idea to draft your response in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste into the application form.

  3. Think about your attributes and achievements which make you a candidate for your chosen grant - in the application you will be expected to explain your attributes and recent achievements and how they relate to your chosen project. It may be a good idea to draft your response in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste into the application form.

  4. Consider how you would spend the money to help achieve your specific goals if you were awarded a RSL Youth Development Grant - in the application form you will be expected to explain how you would spend your money to achieve your goal. Itemise what you would need or like to purchase for your project and include an estimated cost - in the application form you will be required to fill in some details about how much certain events or items will cost in relation to your project. Do your research - visit websites relating to your chosen project and go to local businesses to find out how much certain items cost. Ensure you state any possible item that you may need for your project. If awarded with a grant, you will not be able to claim for any item that was not included in your application.

  5. Decide on which essay question you would like to answer:
A.What contribution do you believe the Returned & Services League (RSL) of Australia makes to society today? OR
B.How can today’s youth benefit from the knowledge and history of the Returned & Services League (RSL) of Australia?
In the application, you will be expected to answer one of these essays in 500 - 1000 words. It may be a good idea to draft your response in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste into the application form. Visit the RSL Serving the Nation website to use the resources provided and learn more about RSL.

  6. Visit or contact your local RSL Sub Branch to organise a letter of support from a Queensland RSL Member - in the application form you will be required to submit a letter from a local RSL member stating their support of your chosen project. You can choose to attach the letter electronically, fax or email it to the RSL Youth Development Program Team.

  7. Contact a person who can confirm the achievements that you will list in your application and is happy to provide you with a written reference -choose someone relevant to you key achievements and project such as your School Principal, sports coach or community leader. You can choose to attach the letter electronically, fax or email it to the RSL Youth Development Program Team.
